This was a mist unexpected direction, and has some interesting possibilities.  Right now it looks like it has nothing to do with the "shotgun over the mantle in Act 1" (AKA the mysterious software sabotage).  If I'm right, this means lots more story (and an interesting idea floated to boot)!

I don't recall any restrictions on owning shipstones.  The inventor just declined to explain how he did it, and no one else ever figured it out.

Yes, that's correct. A little nod to Heinlein can still be modified to fit into the world of this story.
