I thought thoats ARE predators.  (Edgar Rice Burrough's Mars series.)  Their predators must be really nasty.

The "thoats" in this universe are derived from goats. But yes, the predators on Nyumbani can be pretty nasty. Nasty enough that the folks in this little "primitivist" kibbutz make an exception to the "no electrics" rule to have a solar-powered, electrified fence.

I can see how half wits could be laboring to pay for their air, water, and such, but given near current day automation tech, anybody thinking strategically will have a fleet of bots tending to their needs via a commodities market system of abundance. Air & water is abundant in deep space. Hydrogen for fusion is abundant in deep space. Heavier elements are a bit buried, but are none the less available. This is known science in current day. Laziness and mental issues would be the only prevention for near post scarcity society. Life based food and decorations would be the "Gold" of their environment, simply because it is fragile and requires special levels of commitment.

Just because things are cheap and easy to access doesn't mean they've arrived at "post-scarcity." There will always be some sort of scarcity. There's a difference between "abundant" and "limitless." Think of energy requirements. Think of time. Think of opportunity costs.

Very possible.

For somebody like her, that planet could be a relaxing change of pace.

Of course, a "tin-man" (or tin-woman) likely could change "bodies".  (IE Move the CPU from one body to another body.)

Looks like the incognito missing pillar just got news of the attack.

Makes sense (from a certain point of view).  ;D

I can guess; the yolk turns into a living creature. The white is basically food for the developing embryo and as such can not develop into a living creature.

Agreed! That said, I really wanna nitpick at the farm bigot (forgot her name) eating "just the whites."  I wonder what her rational is for that?   ;D ;D ;D

Nod.

Now, I'm not willing to argue with Scott about "How realistic his world is".

I dislike witnessing readers arguing with the creators of books (etc) about the story universe the creators have made.

My position is simple, either enjoy the story as the story-teller made it or don't read/watch the story.

Scott has created a fun story universe.

I see no reason to "nit-pick" about the unrealistic aspects of it.

I just enjoy it.  :)

Naw I feel the same way and I get the idea lots of folks around here are in the "rational anarchist" as described by Heinlein in the Moon is a Harsh Mistress. (Prof de la Paz)
