Post by: Oneil on June 27, 2012, 02:53:27 am
Final day is announced, some might not make it back to forum before the 6th again to say their good wishes so,

Goodbye for now Escape From Terra.

I am certain we will all be watching for news on where and when E.F.T. will return.

Thank you so much, Sandy Sandfort, Scott Bieser, Lee Oaks, and Leila Del Duca for all you have done,

And, reading between the lines: A good way to communicate the above is by purse-string and word-of-mouth. :)

Yup! If you haven't bought a book yet, looks like doing so will help EFT come back sooner. If you have... Know anyone who would appreciate a gift?

Farewell, the beloved comic.

Where else will i get good quality near-future sci-fi and wrong-headed but always-interesting political discussion?

If I have money come the release, i will see about a purchase.

Keep your eyes peeled for EFT's new home.  As soon as Sandy and crew find one, be sure we'll spread the word here.  I'm not just the publisher, I'm also a fan!

Notwithstanding my numerous complaints about your story, you have written a good yarn, and I have not.

EFT will certainly be missed. I took a look at the QV series they are keeping and have to say I think they chose the wrong series to keep on.

No, they know which one will get us to pony up more money, and faster. ;) (nothing against QV, it's awesome, EFT is just awesomer - and easier to find a stopping point for)

<collective blush> You just made my day. Well, that cuts, now we have to find a new venue. I am currently talking to a very accomplished app guy. It may even be possible to offer EFT for free and let advertising pay for it. At least, that seems to be a possible option. Who among you have smartphones and/or tables? If we can support ourselves that way, we can probably give it away free from an advertising-supported website too. It's just speculation right now, but we won't go down without a fight.

I don't have a tablet, but I do have a Kindle, and it would be worth a bit of money for a Kindle version. I've used Calibre to "scrape" it, a few times, and when it works, it's great, but it doesn't always work, and to be honest, I don't know why. A few bucks a month would be more than worth not having to deal with that hassle. (Biesers take note: This goes for all BHP products, btw, a Kindle version would be much appreciated)

You're a content provider.  You are an established online "eyeball grabber."  Just how the hell many hits does Escape From Terra have every day?  What's the distribution (domestic, international)? What are your viewers' demographic characteristics?

I am not a commercial Web site operator, but I should think that they really  need only to know your "footprint" to decide the value of your product to generate hits for their advertisers.

All I know is that we have consistently been in the top hundred web comics out of over 5000 that Top Comics tracks. My WAG is that our readership is predominantly male, with I high proportion of tech types who are mostly libertarians or fellow traveler. I think that the age distribution is all over the map.

I am not a commercial Web site operator, but I should think that they really  need only to know your "footprint" to decide the value of your product to generate hits for their advertisers.

So one would think. Now they just have to see that.  ::)

And so we finally see the story of Pierre Le Boeuf (Guy's snotty ex-UW bureaucrat cousin) come to its resolution - kinda - with him arriving on Vesta to take up what he anticipates will be a well-paid job with the Vesta Council.

Which has just been laughed out of existence.

Thus this instantiation of Escape From Terra comes full-circle, ending pretty much as it had begun, with yet another dedicated drone from the socialist hive about to learn the meaning of anarchocapitalism.

Lucky bastid.

I have another story in the can, that features Pierre. It will be published after EFT finds a new home. BTW, I am currently working on 3 interesting leads to that end.

Thus this instantiation of Escape From Terra comes full-circle, ending pretty much as it had begun, with yet another dedicated drone from the socialist hive about to learn the meaning of anarchocapitalism.

Due to unfortunate circumstances, there were two omissions from our final strip. As of this writing, one has been fixed. In the last panel, a critical name tag was left out. It is there now; please revisit the strip. So yes, we have gone full-circle, with at least one historical element.

The other omission is "Metamorphosis," the EFT team's good-bye message. It contains information about the EFT notification mailing list and the news that Big Head Press has graciously agreed to keep this forum open at least until we find a new home. So now you may revisit only issues, offer venue and marketing advice, or whatever you want to talk about.

I am told that "Metamorphosis" will be put up later. Please check back.

We want to thanks you all for being our bright and loyal posse. It was (and we hope, continue to be) a pleasure entertaining you.

So, let's see.  The Blessing of the Animals situation has to be resolved.  The Neannie story still has a way to go I suspect.  Yes, there's Pierre's "adventures" on Vesta to get to (and my impression is that he's a bit slower on the uptake than Guy).    Of course, there are probably a few good stories to tell about the exodus of the Red Ball Express.  And we haven't even seen Reg and Babbette get back to Ceres yet.

In a week or so I'd have scheduled to rename my collection of saved strips (all of them), adding a leading zero to all of the filenames.  (I can do it in one line, but I'm sloppy so I use a five line shell script).

In "Metamorphosis", my feeling is that Guy should have had his hand on Fiona's shoulder if not her ass.  But I'm a dirty old man.

I'll keep visiting and voting, seven days a week from home, five from work, until the strip has a new host (where I'll vote instead) or the strip drops below the top 1000.  Of course, my ten votes this month so far are how many strips 759-803 have in total.  So I doubt EFT will drop that much further, especially if it's not just me voting.  Hell, I just voted for Roswell, Texas (and I apologize for forgetting to do that lately) and it jumped from 700 to 680 (how they sort strips when there are dozens or hundreds with the same number of votes, I got no clew).  Number 1000 and many above and below have as many votes as there have days in this month, so I guess their authors like them if nobody else.  Strips 1601 on have zero votes for the first six days of the month so I assume they are totally abandoned and/or unloved even by their authors but nobody pulled the plug

What the hell.  I'm putting another few BHP comics on my daily vote from home.  Even (or especially) the finished ones I own in dead tree (plus have saved to disk).  And assuming they they're in stock, I'll grab the printed ones I don't have (Lisa's life insurance will show up any day now) real soon.

Why not self publish? Nearly Free Speech dot net  https://www.nearlyfreespeech.net/ (https://www.nearlyfreespeech.net/)  Has ridiculously cheap web hosting with all the bells and whisles anyone needs, charges by bandwidth used so you pay virtually nothing if you  have no traffic,  Drupal http://drupal.org/ (http://drupal.org/) Is free easy to use web site publishing spoftware - For $50 or so you are up and running - hook up with an advertising company and go for it. You have the product, publishing it is cheap and simple - why pay someone else to make money from your effort?

Just looked and drupal has a premade webcomic publishing module - also free of course.

If you don't want to go the self publishing route, a site you could take a look at is Thrillbent.com - it's Mark Waids pet project, and is all about showcasing the possibilities of digital comics media as a viable alternative to print. He's always seemed like he'd be up for hosting other peoples work, and getting a heavy hitter from the webcomics world (i.e. you guys) could be great for both of you.

There's always Keenspot, and it's baby brother ComicGenesis(formerly Keenspace), but I'm not sure how their business model works, so I don;t know if it would suit you guys. CG wouldn't cost you a penny to put stuff up there, but the problem is that I'm not sure how much you'd be able to make out of it, though I believe succesful CG comics still transfer to Keenspot, which works better. You could always get in touch with them directly.

Self-publishing only means that books would be available for sale--they'd still need to do advertising to attract the buyers.

All very interesting and news to me. I have an inflexible deadline for Wednesday, I have to meet, but after that, I will dive into these sites.

Thanks!

For anyone having trouble getting on the list, it's easy. Just send me an email with "EFT Mailing List" in the subject line. The address is:

     sandy@sandfort.biz

You don't need to write anything in the body of the email, unless you want to. I will copy and paste your email address onto the list.

Coming fom Q.V., meanwhile I also finished reading E.F.T. and I miss it already. I can't say that it's better than Q.V. - it's different, admittedly in a way I like slightly better. While Q.V. seems to develop into a Space Opera / quest, E.F.T. is a collection of shorter stories within the same universe, each shedding lights on one or more aspect of this universe (and the general political ideas), all connected by characters. The characters develop over the course of several stories, setting a time line for the stories. That I consider a very good thing and it is easier to consume for me than a BIG story that develops slowly.

I hope it will continue!

While having never published a web comic, I cannot give any suggestion. All I can say is that a few of my beloved web comics are under the Spiderforest hood. There are very different ones, most not having or openly displaying a political message. But Spiderforest contains some great ones, so there might be hard competition. Even though, good SF comics are rare, so the competition in that niche might not be hard... Well, most likely you already know all about it....

That's all I can contribute. I'd LOVE to read more of it. In the mean time, I must resort to Q.V. for solace. :P
(Well, that's an exaggeration: Q.V. has it's own reasons to be loved by me. But still.)
