Title: About the spammers
Post by: Scott on February 15, 2010, 12:04:26 pm
Spam in any amount is annoying but so far the volume is small enough that Frank and I can deal with it by banning and deleting. If things get out of hand we may change tactics.

I think that's the right tactic Scott.  The main thing is to delete them quickly so they know that their message isn't going to stay on long and they're wasting their time.   8)

Another on Odysseus The Rebel HTML error on p.153: double-quote in script
Username :StupidCamel, posts 1, no link, but rather a pitch after a shallow comment.
The comment doesn't look computer generated, or copied from elsewhere, but the mention of the link is definitely out of left field.

Got it.  They be banned.  Spam removed.

Another.  Username:Stekys 3 posts, all in Odysseus, all with a link to what appears, based on the link, to be a housekeeping service in California.

Just a thought.  How about EDITING the offending links?  Point the links to...'sites of your own selection.

P.S.  Might trim some .sigs too.  There are a couple that seemed...vacuous.  Both have .sigs pointing to 'sites other than personal 'blogs or social networking 'sites.  That last is somewhat...problematic, as there is at least one .sig in one of those threads that DOES contain personal links.

Finest kind.  May the originator steam in what rises from Hell's grills he's strapped to for the rest of eternity.

I wish I could get up to the New Hampshire Liberty Forum, but as usual shit happens -- so I haven't been to one yet (the first one was about ten blocks from my Mom's apartment).  I concentrate on Porcfest (which I can't usually afford either even when I show up), to show off my chili.

Another one.  .sig spam.

weelee02
2 posts so far, both in Odysseus.
Both are two short sentances, and contain nothing but a supposed complement and followup thank you, both without context, and suspicious of nature, (what is a share in this context?).
Both have a BROKEN link in the .sig to a commercial 'site.

Okay, I have erased all my posts in this thread that pointed out spammers as their primary reason for being.

The following are, in my opinion, spammers.  Some of them have been there awhile.  Most of those that have been there awhile have links in the .sig to non-germane commercial 'sites.  One has a broken link in the body.

Some make comments, but for the most part, the comments are shallow, giving no evidence of any actual consideration beyond, (ah, a message board, paste in the "good thread" message.)

Another spammer in Odysseus.
Username Silver
It's .sig tag spam.
Actually, on this one, it's arguably very germane to the general subject, as it's a link for precious metals investing.  Haven't checked the link to see if they ship, or just warehouse.

Yeah, it means they found another way through SMF's Capcha, or somebody didn't use a secure password.  Or maybe there's a fresh generation of mules, though I wasn't expecting that until a couple weeks when the school year starts,

There is a new category of spammer in forums: those who register in person so they can defeat any CAPTCHA or other anti-spam registration schemes, and then deliberately target their posts to a "welcome" or "introduce yourself" or other thread. Their posts almost look like they fit the thread, but they always include some random URL about Rolex watches or other spambait.

Okay, I've kicked out a couple more spammers. I'm not sure how they got around the block on newbies creating new threads so I went in and locked down those restrictions a bit harder. Let's hope this slows 'em down a bit more.

It's a game of whack-a-mole, folks.

Pretty sure I found it.  For some reason, in the EFT board, newbies were allowed to post new topics.  Must have happened when the board was created. Board permissions override the group permissions.  I've explicitly turned it off for this board.  Hopefully, we won't see any more spam (at least from newbies).

The first sentence suggests something somewhat automated.  But there are no links to some site selling something.  So, technically not spamming.  But thanks for the heads up. Will monitor.

Damn spammers, ruining it for the rest of us.

Regarding unintended consequences of rules, (namely the one where newbies aren't allowed to post new topics,) rather than simply posting the topic I registered for this forum in order to post, I have to go around making ridiculous posts like this to raise my post count enough to give me the privilege of posting new topics.

I love these comics, and I am further entertained by lurking these forums, but having a rule like this is kind of like letting the terr'ists, I mean spammers, win...

This rule against newbies posting new topics incentivizes newbies to spam just to raise their post count enough to post new topics.

Gun control is a popular topic.  So forum members are given "bullets" based on posts and karma.  They can "shoot" an abusive poster.  Two or more bullets removes the posters account.
Title: Re: About the spammers

Two new ones.  "July 6th will come too soon", and "Real World: Red Planet"
Both for cell phone accessories.
Both by "AAssautstub",  who only has 2 posts to his? name.  The to just mentioned.

I don't suppose you can turn on captha for awhile?  Just captha for registration should stop it for now.
Title: Re: About the spammers
Post by: Sean Roach on June 02, 2013, 05:59:09 pm
And another, right on top of an existing one.
This one in "July 6th will come too soon", making two to prune from that one.
by "ASorpUnsoro", his? only post.

I've noticed that all these spam accounts start with a capital A, followed by another capital letter.  Do you think it's a flaw in a zombie spambot?

Also, they've been sticking to a single forum, thus far.

My first thought was SEO.
Maybe an addition to the robots.txt file to ignore EFT?

If your looking for commonalities in the last two incidents from this Russian Spammer, as guessed from the Cyrillic and the destination of ad hyperlinks. There is two that prove it IS the same spammer.

Spammer is currently going by name of "Jene4kaGatte" and more importantly is given credit and paid with code number "9RsNdhC8XI"
Both of these are displayed inside message in clear standard text.

First intro line translates to this same lame tirade..

"Hi, users of community forum.bigheadpress.com, about one month back user under anybody Jene4kaGatte has ...."

I have seen too much of this, as my wife seems to have a personal vendetta to troll the web and find every possible button to push and form to fill out until the family e-mail address is mail bombed into the stone age by spam.

No way, it was intended just for her oversized family to send email back and forth too. but as I said she uses that ez to remember name on every web form and I am the lucky fool that get's to clean that mess out for her.

I looked at it.  It is Hari Krishna.  Is that what you meant?  It seems compatible with libertarian ideas (other than the spam).  Their answer to the question, "How can people become good?" is "Repeat the course until you pass."  (I.e. they are big on reincarnation.)

Are sales for sewing machines in "Odysseus the Rebel\Are The Suitors Evil?", compatible with libertarian ideals?
The current last message there has a one-line rebuttal to the post above it, and a link to an on-line vendor of sewing machines.
How sewing machines relate to the character discussed is quite mysterious to me.
