Reading old archives while jonesing for Monday's update, a thought struck me: What kind of salary Nicole has negotiated with Seamus and has the arrangement changed in any way after Nicole got suddenly wealthy? 80k gAu is, after all and according to the author, in the "FY money" range...

I'm also thinking that one of my first reactions on Seamus' revelation at Dalliances would have been to negotiate for a percentage: Even something like 0.01% of the net receipts would fall into "beyond the dreams of avarice" range if Seamus' research pans out. For Seamus it'd be a nice way to pay back for several 'above and beyond the call of duty' moments Nicole has had along being a nice incentive for further excellence... Likewise, with Nicole's new wealth something along lines of "employee stock purchase" might get interesting.

Don't forget there's a familial attachment with Nichole being his daughter.   That said, there's no ethical reason to renegotiate their contract.  Neither party anticipated their "adventures" with Seamus depending on secrecy to accomplish his goals.

Even minimal contact with the project and attending fallout will give an intelligent person plenty of opportunity to get very rich.  The trick will be to stay ahead of the mega-corps attempting to find out and seize control of the project.

As depicted Seamus doesn't seem to be the type to stiff his help, without whom, the project would fail.

Ethical reason or no, this is a big opportunity. And I didn't say "blackmail" or "break contract". Or even "renegotiate". I said "negotiate", as in negotiate for opportunity to buy into the project, ask about possibility of getting part of the salary as percentage, etc.

Think Apple. Think Steve Wozniak. And think what happened to Ronald Wayne. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronald_Wayne

Quite. Which is, if I was Seamus, reason I would want to harness and channel Nicole's self-interest. Last thing he wants is Nicole staying nights awake, thinking up technically-legal-but-damaging-to-enterprise ways to cash in.

"Never appeal to a mans better nature. He may not have one. Invoking his self interest gives you more leverage."
--Robert A. Heinlein

You're quite correct that the important thing is keep ahead of OmegaTek and GenSaxWal. If they realize what Seamus is after, they will do anything (and I mean anything, including acts of war or genocide) to capture Seamus.

As depicted Seamus doesn't seem to be the type to stiff his help, without whom, the project would fail.

Indeed. Still, as Ronnie Raygun put it, "trust, but verify".

After what she's been put through in his absence, I'd say she's due a rather large - as in the Death Star is a rather large space station - bonus. Being made full partner in the deal is pretty much what I would do If I were in Seamus' (now somewhat smaller, I'm sure) shoes.

I'd think Nicole's bargaining position has been compromised somewhat by her disobeying Seamus' direct instructions to: 1) Stay away from journos; and 2) Keep out of trouble.

Of course, right now Nicole is rather pre-occupied with 1) surviving; and 2) winning her freedom.

To be fair, other than the journo, the trouble found her, rather than the other way 'round, and it's looking (though of course, you would know better than I) as though said journo is going to be one of her saviors.

Also, nobody sane would accuse her of a NDA violation due to that "electric universe" BS. Seamus, however, may want to give her few lectures and pointers regarding "care and feeding of journalists"... When they're both on ship boosting towards Mars.

As the previous commenter noted, very little of the Nicole's trouble can be reasonably blamed on her. The Attack on Dr. Sharkisian's clinic will heavily reinforce this impression. If Seamus finds out that Mr. Bobinardi is on Luna, that'll pretty much clinch the things...

Nicole seems to be a magnet for trouble.
Specifically guys who are trouble, but also more general mayhem and misfortune.
Luckily she also has a rather amazing luck rating to go with it.

Nah.  I think she's just got this guy Bieser looking out for her.

Dirty old man.
