Hey:

Being the total and complete gaming geek that I am, I was wondering, does anyone besides me think TBP universe make a cool RPG setting>  If memory serves there was a bunch who has set up a Yahoo Group that was looking to do just that, using Steve Jackson Games' GURPS for the mechanics. (I don't know if this group is still around.) I would actually use the Savage Worlds system from Pinnacle (faster play, easier character creation, flexible rules), myself, but to each his own.

Anyone else have any ideas, suggestions?

Akira:
The problem that I see with your suggestion of a role playing game in TPB universe is that there would not be that much of a possibility for conflicts to actually develop.  The TPB universe would normally work out any kind of conflict as a difference of opinion settled by a adjudicator rather than by fixing bayonets.  It's not like this universe where any gamer can practice on what might have happened if Hitler had actually been able to conquer Soviet Russia for example.  May be it could be set at a different time in the TPB universe in say 138 AL (1914 AD) during the 1000 airship flight or maybe a invasion of hamilton supporters from a different probability than the one that Win Bear is from.  Suggestions anyone? ???

I think it sounds like fun. Or, what you could do is not really be in that universe at all. The really good one in which most of the story is told could be the opening bit, like where you learn controls, or can buy items. But you have little probability portals that take you to different probabilities and fight baddies, and do missions and etc.

There is a (well, there are two) list at yahoogroups to study the concept.  lns_galactic_confederacy and lns-galactic-confederacy.  The former still has traffic.  The latter was created because eventually Yahoo might notice that the former's founder and admin, Kerry Pearson aka Lux Lucre [see pgs. 134-135 of the print version of TPB:TGN -- the guy with the beard]  isn't available to supervise it and they might take it away sometime.  (Both groups combined have less traffic/month than almost any given thread on this forum).

Jeez.  Just looking through the first few messages on the Yahoo list (been a while), two friends no longer with us, Lux and SEK3.  I'm starting to feel old.

Two possibilities that I've thought of that could be the basis of a board game are:

What if Win had never made it over to the NAC universe to warn his doppelganger and Lucy Kropotkin about the Hamiltonian plot? Likely Madison and company would have succeeded in bringing hydrogen bombs over, and a serious power struggle would have ensued.

Or, suppose that Win and Lucy had failed to thwart Victor Malaise's scheme in The Venus Belt? Now an army of Hamiltonians would be descending on the Solar Confederacy.

And even if we don't screw around with Neil's history, there were certainly wars within the normal NAC timeline, some of which are mentioned in TPB. And even in that time-frame, Gallatinism had not yet taken over the world -- China and India are never even mentioned.

Or going forward to the Tom Paine Maru/Brightsuit MacBear time-frame, there are numerous worlds that had been settled by Malaise's people and had developed their own statist cultures. There may be opportunities there to role-play conflicts between the Confederates and the denizens of these worlds, and especially with Vespuccia, the only "Kilroy" world which developed FTL spacefight. Even though Confederate tech is far advanced, Vespuccia would be tough for them to deal with.

This is interesting.  A first person shooter style interface, where you're Win Bear, traveling to different PTLs to stop the forces of government.  There would be lots of gun play of course. ;-)  Any Half-Life 2 people out there?

Frank and Scott:
You guys have come up with a couple of scenarios that didn't occur to me at the time I wrote my previous post.  Maybe your on to something.  One thing about China though, although I'm not anything even close to being an expert, Taoism in many respects mimics libertarism or maybe I should say it the other way around since Taoism goes back something like 2,300 years.  It occurs to me that in TPB universe that China would have switched over from Buddhism to Taoism with a minimum of bloodshed.

Some Friends of mine and I did a gaming scenario using GURPS ten years or so ago set in TPB universe.  Somewhere I've still got the
weapons table that I cobbled together.  Found it! Forgot I had it on computer.  Semper Pack Rat.
