Interesting refrerence to Jughead Jones.  I'm wondering how many others will recognize it.

You mean the "Jughead hat"?  While the stylized decoration is there, it looks to me like the guy's hair, not a hat.

And how about the guy with the Devo-type hat?

Dunno 'bout the styles, but they sure as heck made her feel unwelcomed.  it seems that the loonies could use a good lesson in decorum.   Angry

So, is *this* guy Mr. Graves' agent?

(Edit) Okay - this is him. He looks heavier than he did in strip 219. Maybe it;s the clothes he's wearing/displaying now compared to the basic bodysuit he had on earlier.

My dinkum word! Those chooms are waste of air and cubic. Toss into airlock, cycle to zero pressure.  No huhu, no loss.

Well, it's just become obvious why the Luna authorities really do not want L-5ers to mingle with their citizens while armed as is usual and customary in their home polity.

"An armed society is a polite society" - for obvious reasons - and were such visitors equipped with zringers to comport themselves among the Loonies in public places like that bar as per the customs commonplace in an armed society, we'd have to "Think of it as evolution in action."

Not that this wouldn't be a wonderfully salubrious public health measure.

If that crew of Loonies were armed, they'd be more a danger to each other than to anyone else. Come to think of it, that describes quite a few heavily armed subcultures I can think of.

...for that matter, I suppose it describes a heavily armed world.

So is the new arrival the agent? Or an actual decent human being?

And this would not serve a public health benefit precisely...how?

Heck, they could balance the planetary budget just by selling the cable* rights. ;-)

*whatever they are currently calling 'cable,' anyway.

Just say "video rights".  But then they would have to forcibly suppress any random vlogger from uploading their own videos!

"An armed society is a polite society"

So it has been said, but I don't believe that's the whole truth. I think an armed society is one where the poor shots are polite to the good shots and the good shots can bully the poor shots with impunity.

And arrogating to yourself [that's generic you, not personal you] the right to kill someone for being rude to you is to concede to others the right to shoot you for offending them. You had better be real sure you're never going to do anything to offend anyone before you do that.

Everyone is a good shot, given the right circumstances. You never know if that guy you pissed off that might not be able to hit a target from 10 paces happens to be right behind you at point blank range. Or maybe he has a buddy that's a pro sniper. Or...

Its the same thing as when concealed carrying is allowed. You never know who can take you out, so your best bet is to not cause anyone to want to.

The point of that aphorism is not to say it's okay to shoot someone for being rude. It's a comment on the levelling effect of firearms when they're widely distributed. It's not like martial arts, or swords, or archery, where you have to practice for years to gain a middling proficiency. Anyone with decent eye-sight and a good right hand can become a good-enough shot for most circumstances with only a couple of dozen hours' practice.

Don't fall for those stories you see in cowboy movies where some bad guy is such a tremendous gun-fighter that ordinary people are defenseless against him and have to call in the hero-with-no-name, or someone like him, to take the bastard down. Real life isn't like that.

Right on. For one example, ask the James/Younger gang how that Northfield, Minnesota bank raid went.

No, you never know if that perfect stranger you just met is better than you. You do know the people you meet in your daily life, and if you're a bully, you will bully the ones that are not up to your standard. Or you get yourself a buddy who is a good shot.

As for not knowing how good that perfect stranger is, many people have an subconcious inability to believe that they're not special. If they've never met anyone that could best them, they'll unconciously assume they won't ever meet someone like that. Sure, that means some day they may get a nasty surprise, but that's not going to help his earlier victims much, is it?

Quote
Or maybe he has a buddy that's a pro sniper. Or...
But killing a man from ambush would be murder, wouldn't it? Not an honest duel.
