The frog guy that triggers the pepe-adverse here has no butt-crack head, a conspicuous yellow belly, and no exaggerated lips that remind me of blackface Zwarte Piet. You probably couldn't argue he's even a derivative work, which is often a protected case.

Well I do consider the SLPC to be an authority on bigotry, if they aren't I don't know who is. The entire organization was formed and dedicated to fighting the Jim Crow laws that said black people aren't as good as white people. If you don't believe them perhaps http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/cult-of-kek or http://thecultofkek.com/ both of which list Pepe the Frog as the image used for the the Cult of Kek. And if you don't think Pepe is a symbol of racism and bigotry (at least at this point) then I'm pretty sure that says more about you than it does of the Kek worshipers. Now Scott says that this isn't Pepe in the comic and as the author that's pretty unimpeachable. I think he might understand why people might think that way however.

Especially since he calls himself "Kek."  That says "Pepe" to me because if there's a distinction i haven't heard of it.  What little i know of racist troll culture is that they use both interchangeably.

Yep. Sometimes a frog is just a frog.

Kek is one of the 3 Egyptian male gods (who had female counterparts) of darkness/chaos who manifested as frogs.  While the gods of chaos were important in stories of the creation of the world, the frog idols in Egypt (the inspiration for Pepe) were of Heqet, a female goddess of childbirth, sex, kitchen, and other traditional female roles.  You can buy a replica on Amazon.  The hieroglyphics for Heqet look like someone sitting at a computer, and this is what initially attracted millennials.  They called it Kek instead of Heqet because of the chaos theme (and also ignorance).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heqet
https://www.amazon.com/Egyptian-Goddess-Heket-Statue-Inches/dp/B06XDFRY9J/

In the Exodus story, the 10 plagues were directed against various gods of Egypt.  The frog plague was directed against Heqet.  Moses interrupted the annual procession down the Nile in honor of Heqet to announce the plague, and the frogs infested "bedrooms, beds, cooking pots" - the very things Heqet was supposed to bless.  Killing frogs was a crime in ancient Egypt, both because of the ecological importance in the Nile ecosystem and because a frog could be a manifestation of Heqet.  So it is amusing to picture the Egyptians gingerly trying to place their feet without crushing any frogs . . .

The modern origin of the cult of Kek, or Pepe, as I have seen, is that some liberal cartoonist created the cartoon frog, some anti-Left & anti-Islam types adopted him as their mascot. The creator took offense and killed off his own creation. 3 days later the Cult of Kek raised him from the dead like some kind of Jesus type. It was all quite entertaining in a blasphemous way.

As for the SPLC, the whole civil rights movement was all quite necessary and the alphabet NGO's that sprang up were quite helpful, but the movement was hijacked early by the Socialist party and most of the NGO's were corrupted and reduced to being shills for the Democrat party, who has establish a habit of calling anything they don't like racists. Including peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. The NRA, founded to arm freed slaves so that they stayed free, seems to be an exception.

Methinks this thread has skewed into "Talk amongst Y'selves" territory, as it really doesn't relate to the comic.

I think you're probably right. It kinda makes me want to start a "Modern politics as it relates to the strip of the day" thread however. I think I'm far to the left of many of the posters/readers here and I'd be interested in having a civil conversation about some of these things.

On the topic of todays strip I think the "council" is looking to add a Manic Pixie Dream Girl to the meme roster.

Can't speak about their founding, but they should no longer be considered by anyone as an "authority on bigotry".

They have for some times been slandering right wing and libertarian think thanks as being racists extremists.

They have even slandered Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Maajid Nawaz as being an extremist.  These 2 are former muslims who speak out on the problems of Islam.

And they exaggerate the threat of groups like the KKK, which are very small.  They seem to do this to raise more money for themselves.

Sadly, it seems the Anti-Defamation League is just as bad.

I love how you're an expert on the SPLC but you can't speak about their founding. Ayaan Hirsi Ali is on their list because shes an anti-Muslim extremist. She has said in her own words that there is no such thing as a non-violent Muslim which is patently false. Maajid Nawaz advocated for wiretapping on all Muslims without warrants and has said similar things as Ayaan.

Oh and by the way - the KKK/Far Right has killed about as many Americans in the US since 9-11 than Muslims have. I think the SPLC has it about right. From Politifact:
Since then from Sept. 12, 2001, to Dec. 31, 2016  there have been 85 attacks in the country by violent extremists resulting in 225 deaths. GAO reported citing data from the U.S. Extremist Crime Database.

Of those 225 deaths:

106 individuals were killed by far-right violent extremists in 62 separate incidents;

119 individuals were killed by radical Islamist violent extremists in 23 separate incidents;

Got the actual facts on that first one? You're sure those aren't actually far LEFT violent extremists like Antifa or BLM? I dunno about you, but I see a lot more violent lefties out there than actual KKK or neo nazis. Not that the KKK or NNs aren't vile piles of excrement, but you would think such events would be all over the mainstream media and easily documented.

So. Gamers of the Galaxy. If they picked up Terran tropes from the beginning of the spaceflight era to portray, I can see "The Dude", "Pepe the Frog", and a pasty basement nerd being used. Not sure about number 4. Mr. Dickhead?

Well my source was Politifact. I'd ask you to name me a death at the hands of a leftist, just one, but I'm sure you would tell me that the lamestream media and fake news are suppressing the news of gun-hating hating pacifists going out and killing people. There isn't much point though. Your position is clear and I'm done talking to you.

Look at "Adam's" eyeglasses. The shape is the GamerGate symbol. So that's who Adam symbolizes.

I think "Fred" isn't a dickhead, he's a neckbeard. He's all neck. A FEDORA-WEARING neckbeard, which the Urban Dictionary associates with the 'Chans (4-chan and 8-chan in particular -- if there's other chans, I'm not familiar with them).

The Dude...maybe because Scott really liked "The Big Lebowski" a lot? Maybe the Dude stands for those of us who aren't Gamer Gaters or Fedora-wearing neckbeards, who just like to lay back in a bathrobe, do some serious drugs, and go bowling once in a while. I'm not sure, I never watched the movie. I hate bowling. I saw an article associating the Dude with Millennials by some strange mental gyrations. Maybe Dude represents Millennials? Frankly, I don't think so. I just think he's a lazy man who's looking for that one rug that pulls the whole room together. He just...abides.

So we have the 'chans, Gamer Gate, and the Man who Abides. And Kek, who I'll bet is a bit of a hedonist, just looking for what feels good.

But all of them together, well, they like to exchange the brewed coffee with Folger's Crystals, just to watch the fun.

Ah, I was right, this galaxy is a giant video game. The players have used their abilities to set themselves up as gods. The second worst sorts of gods in existence. Their redeeming factor is they didn't set up a universe around conflict with all the pain and suffering involved strictly for the purpose of generating pain and suffering, but simply for the amusement of the game play. The problem being they do not see their own creations as "real" or even remotely equal. They are simply game pieces. It's enough to give some respect for Farmville players. The question is, how much of a conscience can Ethnie bring to the group?

As for the SPLC discussion, I view them and other organizations through the same principle as I view people. I view them in terms of the Repentance Principle. Namely, while past deeds have importance, current deeds are more important and future deeds more important yet. As a member of a family that has been multi racial for 130 years, I consider my opinion of the various civil rights organizations to have merit.
