My impression is she's jealous. Zander could probably calm these waters, and get to go enjoy a dinner with an old friend, by simply pointing out that said friend doesn't date guys.

OK.  Does the introduction of Ginger just mean that Zander has a girlfriend or is Ginger going to be a complication in Diana's case?

Oh, am I paranoid?  Yes at times, especially when I reading stories.  ;D

There are some people going on about how if we could only grow hemp, we could replace all imported petroleum, and get kick-ass fabric, trail mix, plastic, etc etc etc.

That's a bit of an overstatement - biofuels cannot completely replace petroleum, but:

1) hemp is not pot,
2) hemp was a major cash crop in the US before it was banned.
3) the US Constitution was written on hemp paper.
4) hemp fabric is 3 times stronger than cotton, and soft.
5) The Model T use hemp for plastic parts and fuel and "grown in America" was part of its advertising.
6) The banning of hemp was the result of a political conspiracy by industrial competitors to hemp (cotton, paper, petroleum, etc).
7) The excuse given for banning hemp as part of the (unconstitutional) "drug war" was that it "looks like pot".  Of course, japanese maples look like pot.  https://stopthedrugwar.org/speakeasy/2008/feb/04/cop_dead_because_informant_misto
8) Hemp and pot are related, and hemp pollen "ruins" pot for "getting high" purposes - so hiding pot in hemp fields is not actually practical.
9) Hemp seeds are a (zero THC) "superfood".
10) Hemp rope is still the gold standard short of future tech (spider silk/carbon fiber/etc).

I hope Monty recommends a(nother) full brain backup at this point.

Which of course begs the question as to where to trust the backup.

Speaking of which, surely it's possible to "interrogate" a brain backup to recover information and memories, right? Unless the backup was encrypted of course.  Speaking of which, what was going on in page=1286?

So it looks like Alyss got Diana away from Areum for a few minutes?

In strip 1286, Alyss is giving Hayami a sort of combination download/upload/software-update/fluid-flush.

In strip 1865, Areum is in the room, out of the frame. I got tired of drawing her just standing around all the time.

I wonder if Otto, in an effort to keep track of his crush, decided to install the tracking devices. The trackers may have been installed under Lorelei deClayer's watch, if you will, but there are several more minor characters on this chess board at the deClayer ranch, each with, presumably, their own agendas.

Back in the 90's, there was a mailing list that was playing around with encryption systems where you handed out a large number of pieces, and to reassemble the message, you needed some set number of those pieces.

So, say you mostly trust five individuals, but you could see one, MAYbe two, betraying you, if the stakes were high enough, (or they were just burgled, and merely didn't have security strong enough to hang on to your file.) So you take a file, this file of you, and you encrypt into five unique parts. To decrypt it, you need at least three of the parts, but it's gibberish if you have two or fewer parts.

The system they were working on would work for larger numbers as well. Maybe you encrypt your file into one hundred parts, of which a person would need fifty one to reassemble the original, or perhaps they would need sixty seven, a two-thirds majority. Anything less, and the file is useless.

In this context, Diana could give a partial encrypted backup, for safekeeping, to each of the people she's met and has developed a measure of trust with. Monty might have one, Zander another, perhaps her boss a third, (this one is presumably compromised now,) Dong might have a fourth, and the fifth could be placed with a person we have yet to meet on screen, or could be kept with the mechanic. The key for any one part is any two of the other parts.

Of course, if any one has been positively or likely compromised, you could go to any of the other three safeguarders, assuming you can trust them not to keep a copy, and ask for your backup back, with them getting a new one for safekeeping. One that isn't paired with a now-compromised component.

I...have to wonder if quantum entanglement could be used to ensure erasure. I'm both worried and hopeful that it might, but I suspect this might be one of those mis-conceptions about quantum entanglement, and I simply don't have the physics background to separate the signal from the noise.
If so, it would make for a NASTY DRM system, but it would also allow for secured deletion of contingency files, too.

Just to clarify, the question is who to trust with the backup.

Which of course begs the question as to where to trust the backup.

Diana trusts Monty, but probably not Alyss. And no longer trusts her assurance agency, S&H.

To me, Zander is the obvious person to pick for the execution of a "will" (a/k/a "advance directive on restoring meatbots from backup in case of untimely death")

I brought this up before in another thread:

Well, Areum could be in the room but "not in the pictures" (so to speak).  ;)

After I posted that last comment I realized we're talking about maybe 3-4 cannabis references in almost 7 years of strips. So I apologist and retract.

There are some people going on about how if we could only grow hemp, we could replace all imported petroleum, and get kick-ass fabric, trail mix, plastic, etc etc etc.

CBD shows very promising results as an anti-seizure medicine, and I know someone who vapes it for back pain relief from a workmans comp related electrical accident. There seems to be a way to do this in many states that only breaks federal law, and of course Big Pharma has just recently put out a standardized extract.

CBD oil doesn't (or isn't supposed to) have THC in it, so getting stoned is not the cure.

CBD oil does get a bit over-sold but there is some good evidence it helps people with Parkinson's Disease, and others maladies that cause seizures. I haven't decided yet whether it will help Diana's headaches. Eventually I'll reveal what's actually causing them.
