The tracer is in the part of her arm that got broken.  Had to be installed by Lorelei's medics.

If I were Diana, I'd have the Mechanic's medics see if there was some "extra" in her head implants.

Did anyone think to check Diana herself for unauthorized modifications that could have been installed by Lorelei's medics?

That's likely but I had this image of the Mechanic knowing Diane and Diane knowing the Mechanic in spite of the "security concerns" mentioned. [Grin]

I'm pretty sure this is not someone Diane would know back home. They haven't been out of there long enough to have gain the skill and reputation. That being said, she may still be someone we have seen before from chapter 1, or related to them.

Well, I speculated some time back that the high-class prostitute might have been providing other discreet services. At the time it was backup housecalls, with the customer knowing EXACTLY where the ONE copy is kept, but it doesn't have to be that, or only that.
Maybe it was housekeeping. Someone has to sweep for bugs.

It's unlikely to be Zander as the Mechanic is definitely said to be female and I doubt Murphy is the Mechanic as she's been busy roaming the far frontier.

Now what might be interesting is that the Mechanic is somebody Diana knew "back home". [Twisted Grin]

I'm thinking that the laser is for discrete communication - not a weapon.   You can only do so much with encryption.

Looks like you called that one. You win the Internet today! ;)

Of course, if it is easy to up the power level by a factor of a trillion or so to make the laser also a potential weapon - so much the better.

Like in a Larry Niven story, where the humans used their communications lasers as improvised weapons against the Kzinti (sorry, I forget which story).

I'm going out on a limb and guessing that "The Mechanic" is Murphy--or maybe Zander? Just a S.W.A.G (Stupid, Wlld-Ass Guess) on my part. Don't laugh too much when I'm wrong :)

I'm thinking that the laser is for discrete communication - not a weapon.   You can only do so much with encryption.   It is much better if your opponents can't intercept the communication to begin with.  Ideally, the laser would also be entangled, so that interception can be detected.

Diane is not taking well to the James Bond stuff.  But her new security provider seems quite competent!

4 tracking devices, 4 spy cameras, but the remote disabler is disabled...

1: Lorelei wants Diane to succeed, but also wants to know what she is working on.

2: Lorelei has some of Diane's enemies working in her garage.

3: Diane needs to have her body scanned for implanted explosives. That would be just as effective as a remote disabler on the car.

4: Lorelei is playing both sides? She is doing it badly. Maybe a third party? The environment is ripe for multiple factions to be pursuing their own agendas and taking advantage of a competitors problem is only good business.
